Inspired by Butler’s ‘Charge of the Scot’s Greys’ and named after the company who produce a ‘Waterloo’ board game, ‘Phalanx’ (1m x1.50m, oil on canvas) plays on modes of cultural memory regarding war, man and machine, masculinity and capitalism, and the question of nationhood in a time of uncertainty in the United Kingdom.
